Flavanols in Cocoa Benefit Cardiovascular Health
Two new studies by German researchers at the University Hospital Düsseldorf have found that cocoa flavanols can help to keep our hearts healthy.
The flavanols, nutrients found naturally in the cocoa bean, however, are often destroyed when cutting or cooking the beans. When consumed those flavanols have shown to lower blood pressure and increase blood vessel function.
"It is [...] pivotal that we understand the positive impact diet can have on CVD risk. As part of this, we want to know what role flavanol-containing foods could play in maintaining the health of the heart and blood vessels," says Dr. Malte Kelm.
