As adherence is
the main predictor of long-term outcome from exercise in
hip or knee OA, strategies to improve adherence should be
adopted, such as long-term monitoring. Similarly, patients
should do exercise they enjoy to promote long-term participation.
Some exercises are likely to be harmful in the
long term, particularly those that involve high velocity
impact (running, step aerobics, etc.) on an already injured
joint surface; thus these should be actively discouraged
