Metal foams can be open cell, closed cell, or a combination of the two. Open-cell foam is made up of a network of interconnected solid struts, which allows the passage of a fluid or gas media. The unique properties and weight-saving advantages of metal foams simulate the interest of its application as radiation shielding materials or as components of shielding structures. The present paper investigates the capability of an ultra-light structure employingopen-cell aluminum foams to attenuate c-rays and thermalneutrons.
