Learning outcome 4 is demonstrating the use of reflection to make changes in your writing and explaining how you can use this along with the other skills taught in English 3010 to approach a completely new writing task. I have demonstrated this in my Reflection of the Revision of my Introduction and my reflection of the revision of my data collection report. In my reflection of the revisions made in my introduction, I discussed the things I did well, such as establishing my problem and organizing my introduction. I believe I had a decent introduction, but there was definitely room for improvement. In my introduction reflection, I stated “I had good ideas within my paper but they were lost behind all the choppy, short, and meaningless sentences I included” (74). Upon reflecting on my original draft, I realized that it was written in a “laundry list” format; it consisted of short sentences that kept my paper from flowing smoothly. It was hard to read and distracted the reader from the meaning of my paper. When revising my introductions, I realized that this format needed to be changed. In my reflection, I explained “what I did to improve my introduction was to combine sentences to make it more meaningful. I had some great ideas and when I combined the sentences, it made it easier to understand” (75). This example shows how I used reflection to transform my original draft into clear and fluid final introduction.
