The most clinically relevant
complex species were recently revised based on phenotypic
and genotypic diversity, supported by the presence of distinct
and consistent lines, and it proposes to recognize C. neoformans
var. grubii (represented by genotypes VNI and VNII)
and C. neoformans (VNIII and VNIV) as separate species, as
well as five species of C. gattii (represented by genotypes VGI,
VGII, VGIII, and VGIV) [1, 2].
