The real task, in my view, is to foster allegiance to our democratic institutions, and the best way to do this is not by demonstrating that they would be chosen by rational agents 'under the veil of ignorance' or in a 'neutral dialogue', but by creating strong forms of identification with them. This should be done by developing and multiplying in as many social relations as possible the discourses, the practices, the language games' that produce democratic 'subject positions'.
