Among the six clusters, Cluster III had the maximum of 11 clones out of which eight clones were from northwest arid
zone and one each from middle Gujarat (IND 07-1483),north Gujarat (IND 07-1474) and north Saurastra (IND
07-1458). Grouping of S. spontaneum clones based on their location of collection was reported by Sheji Mary et al.
(2006) based on the RAPD study. The clones in this cluster had comparatively thicker stalks with an average of 5.0 mm.
All the eight clones collected in the Kachchh district under north west zone were grouped into Cluster III and the region
is distinctly characterized by low annual rainfall (400 mm) with uneven distribution. Most of the rivers including the
river Luni which flows across the whole region are dry and water flows for only 1 month. Hence these clones can be
further characterized and evaluated for drought tolerance
