PROVOCATIVE PRINTS
New York: The always-flamboyant Jeremy Scott looked to the east for inspiration for his spring collection – the Middle East, to be exact. The show opened with a body-hugging dress emblazoned with his logo along with Kalashnikov rifles, all covered with what appeared to be a burqa made from black chiffon. Other looks featured motifs borrowed from keffiyehs, traditional Arab scarves. That Scott was making some sort of statement on the state of affairs in that part of the world is doubtful. Most likely, he was just being provocative for provocative’s sake, but he was certainly having fun. Other motifs in the print-heavy show included exotic leopard and snakeskin, flames, filigree, and imagery borrowed from American money. The clothes themselves seemed almost an afterthought. Boxy tops, cropped jackets, and body-con dresses felt uninspired. Scott would do well to give the garments as much thought as he does his striking prints. –Joanna Manganaro
