Salters in the UK (University of York Science Education Group [UYSEG] 2000 ) ,
Industrial Science in Israel (Hofstein and Kesner 2006 ) , Chemie im Kontext in
Germany (Parchmann et al. 2006 ) and Chemistry in Practice in The Netherlands
(Bulte et al. 2006 ) . We have also incorporated in the review, research that was conducted
in the 1970s and 1980s for physics that provides further evidence of positive
outcomes for context-based learning (i.e., PLON, Physics Curriculum Development
Project, Eijekelhof and Kortland 1988 ). Common themes emerged from the literature
on the six projects which fall into three key areas: relevance, interest and deeper
understanding.
