Nonetheless, these philosophical-religious traditions each found a place in East Asian society. As mentioned earlier, they collectively became known as the Three Teachings.
In some ways, they influenced each other. For instance, the Daoist concept of wuwei or non-action came to be seen as a correlate of Mahayana Buddhist emptiness (shunyata), or the ultimate lack of substantiality in the world.
Later on, Chan (Zen) Buddhism echoed Daoism’s suspicion of using language to understand the world. In this sense we could say that Chan Buddhis incorporates some Daoist perceptions of human nature.
