Scavengers contribute towards waste recycling through the recovery of materials largely from landfill sites, commercial centres and households. They put the materials through some form of physical processing before selling them to the middlemen or companies. The processing may include material segregation, washing dirty plastics, shredding, compaction for easy packing and transportation, dismantling of metal parts (e.g., car engines to take out copper, aluminium and lead) and weighing. Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) items like wires and computers are usually burnt to expose and recover the saleable parts.
