Biomass as energy is now needed to find
an alternative to the worlds finite nonrenewable
energy resources and reduce
gaseous emissions to comply with Kyoto
targets. Liquid biofuels, such as
bioethanol, have lower emissions, are
biodegradable and are considered to be
environmentally friendly. Bioethanol is
produced with the help of yeasts that
convert easily fermentable carbohydrates
obtained from sugar beet, sugar cane or
cereals into ethanol. The crops most suited
to Ireland include wheat and sugar beet.
There are a number of factors that need to
be assessed upon the introduction of a
bioethanol plant in Ireland. A major factor
that can influence its success is
government support including excise relief
on biofuel production, which have been
issued as incentives to set up such a
facility.
