Web 2.0 related technologies such as blogs and social networking ranked poorly as well as other Web-based tools such as online seminars and podcasts. Despite evidence from other studies that SMTEs are embracing new technologies, the investigation indicates that emerging platforms are being adopted rather slowly. In acquiring new information, it was found that respondents preferred less structured learning environments where questions are welcomed and that they are uninterested in online training. Respondents also indicated a clear preference for learning on the job over venue-based training, for learning from friends and colleagues over formal training and for ‘googling’ over phoning. There is a strong preference for less formal training, increasing independence when gathering information and considerable reliance on the Internet as a potent medium for capacity building.
