In June 1958, Souvanna was forced from office by the rightists and the succeeding government went on to rule by decrees. Souphanouvong and his associates were arrested but could later escape to join the Pathet Lao territories and embarked on guerrilla warfare. In 1960, while the communist world and some non-aligned nations such as India upheld Souvanna's as Lao's rightful prime minister, the US and the West recognised the newly military-controlled Vientiane government under another prince Boun Oum.
