Manei Naanyu
The integration of indigenous knowledge with modern ICT in coping with climate change is urgently needed. Regarding Manei Naanyu, ICTs and in particular mobile phones are important tools to gather and disseminate indigenous knowledge. Crowdsourcing can be a tool to collect and share information as long as expectations to the communities are crystal clear.

Climate change has become a major global threat for agricultural development. Many countries are facing the negative effects that come with it such as drought, floods, loss of fauna and flora leading to loss of biological diversity among many others.
To cope with the consequences the world is looking mainly to technological advanced solutions. However, indigenous knowledge has often been overlooked. Indigenous people are rich with the local knowledge, which was used long time by ancient society to cope with weather and climate change. If such local knowledge is integrated with modern knowledge then a better solution may be found in coping with climate change.
Since most of the indigenous knowledge is held in tacit form it will be important if such knowledge is converted to accessible data. ICTs can play a significant role in this process to gather, to process, and to access the information; for example through mobile phones’ voice recorders, participatory video, or through access to internet. By making use of ICTs, indigenous knowledge becomes easy to be referred to by the modern society, as it is a way of preservation of the local knowledge to prevent its extinction.
In Kenya a project executed by the University of Nairobi was set up with the purpose to collect indigenous knowledge in combination with a study on how ICTs can be used to share and disseminate the information outside the villages. The aim was to integrate indigenous knowledge with modern ICT in coping with climate change. It was conducted among 3 counties in Kenya: Kajiado, Uasin Gishu and Kirinyaga. All the three counties consist of different communities, which have varying indigenous knowledge that were then compared with reference to climate change. The study area comprised of pure pastoralists, agro pastoralists and pure crop farmers respectively.
Interviews, use of questionnaires, and focus group discussion were used to gather much information as possible on indigenous knowledge available regarding climate issues from local indigenous people. This was done in remote villages where people really feel the pinch of climate change. Information became available mainly from the old people and women because of the wisdom that goes with age and the women who are available at their homes. During the focus group discussions people shared information as the questions elicited so many reactions that generated a lot of information.
Indigenous knowledge on how indigenous people used to predict climate variability as well how they mitigated and coped with these changes is the information that is collected. Once this information was collected, it was analyzed and then integrated with ICT components such as mobile phones, radios, participatory videos, magazines, social media and many others that can be used by the local and modern society to cope with climate change.
One of the conclusions of the study was that in remote areas, the technology that is more appropriate for many people is the use of mobile phones which is a rapidly adapted technology for people in rural areas in Kenya. The local people including the illiterate ones are well versant with the use of mobile phones. If indigenous knowledge regarding climate change is collected and integrated with ICT components such as mobile phones, weather variability information and measures to be taken by the farmers are sent to them using short message services. Other forms of technology such as use of internet is a bit complicated because of lack of electricity in most rural areas that makes the use of computers very minimal as well as poor internet connectivity in remote areas.
Crowdsourcing indigenous knowledge can be very helpful nowadays since individuals tend to be more open in web-based projects where they are not being physically judged or scrutinized therefore making them feel more comfortable in sharing the information. Crowdsourcing as tool of data collection has an advantage as it gives the interviewee satisfaction of a given type of need, like economical, social recognition, self-esteem, or the development of individual skills, while the crowdsourcer will obtain and utilize to their advantage that information they will be volunteering to give depending on the topic.
Though, one major common trap during the project was the monetary expectations from the crowd. The crowd, in our case the indigenous people, expected to be paid after giving out of the information. This was so because some other projects which were done previously by other people had monetary motivations for their audiences.
As such it is important to be clear about the purpose of the crowdsourcing initiative and on the forehand communicate well what you expect from each other and how the population can benefit from giving their information.
