The presentation of a structure
As in the presentation of vocabulary, we show a structure’s form, its meaning and also its use. We also use the same ostensive or verbal technique to indicate meaning. Structures for beginning classes have invariably been chosen because meaning can be shown, rather than explained, but when more complex structures are introduced use must be made of verbal explanation, too. With careful planning and the creation of contexts which typify ways in which the structure is used, it is usually possible to stay in the target language.
