Service providers in the hospitality and
tourism industry are supposed to have some
education and training concerning access
provision, and services related to people
with disabilities. Organizations may do this
through a variety of ways, including mandatory
modules on disability awareness in both
orientation and performance appraisal programs
(Darcy, 2000; O’Neill and Knight, 2000;
Miller and Kirk, 2002; McKercher et al., 2003;
Daruwalla and Darcy, 2005).
Special needs customers often do not
have the appetite of a normal person, so
smaller food portions are much appreciated.
Other features particularly valued by special
needs customers include night lights, extra
blankets, and legible, visible signage in
public areas such as hallways and restaurants
(Ananth et al., 1992).
It is believed that by improving the quality
of services for disabled people, the quality of
services to those tourists without disability
could also be improved accordingly (Chen,
2004).
