Foster Pharma custom formulations are produced using advanced melt extrusion technologies that ensure dispersion of the active pharmaceutical throughout the polymer matrix. Suitable resins are PLLA (poly-L-lactide), PDLA (poly-D-lactide), PLGA (polylactic-co-glycolic acid), PGA (polyglycolide) and PCL (polycaprolactone). These polymers are biocompatible, sterilizable by irradiation or ETO and are absorbed into the body and metabolized. Formulations with these polymers can be tailored to have degradation times of 1 month up to greater than 24 months, with a tensile strength of 20 MPa to 100 MPa, and elongations up to 100%. Examples include a PLA polymer matrix and analgesic for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications.
