Probiotic strains were obtained in pure culture from Sacco S.r.l.
(Cadorago, Italy). The strains included Bifidobacterium animalis ssp
lactis, Enterococcus faecium (n ¼ 2), Lactobacillus plantarum (n ¼ 4),
Lactobacillus rhamnosus (n ¼ 3), Lactobacillus casei (n ¼ 2) and one
each of Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactobacillus
brevis, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus sakei (Table 1).
All strains were grown on ManeRogosaeSharp (MRS) agar (Oxoid,
Roskilde, Denmark) aerobically for 48 h at 37 C, except B. animalis
ssp lactis, which was grown anaerobically under otherwise identical
conditions. Anti-clostridial activity was measured on the
reference strains C. difficile ATCC 10898 (ribotype 078, toxinotype V,
NAP7, tcdAþ, tcdBþ, cdtþ) and C. perfringens NTCT 3180 Limited to the well agar diffusion assay, three human
clinical isolates of C. difficile belonging to ribotypes 027, 066 and
023, and one porcine clinical isolate (Type A, plcþ, cpb2þ) and one
other reference strain of C. perfringens (NCTC 10240, Type A, plcþ,
cpeþ) were additionally tested using selected probiotics to
encompass common important genotypes and toxin profiles
occurring in human and animal clinical isolates. Limited to the well
agar diffusion assay, the inhibitory activity of two selected probiotic
strains (L. plantarum LPAL and B. animalis lactis BLC1) was also
tested against a reference strain of Escherichia coli (ATTC 25922)
and Staphylococcus aureus (ATTC 25923) to examine the spectrum
of putative antimicrobial compounds produced by these two
probiotics
