When the political system of the country changed from an absolute
monarchy to a constitutional monarchy in 1932 during the reign of King Rama
VII, the focus of the educational system was to offer education equally to all
citizens and more on political problems. A new English syllabus was introduced
in secondary schools. It focused on reading aloud with correct pronunciation
and comprehension of the text. Grammar and translation were also emphasized.
During World War II (1941-1945), the Japanese occupation of Thailand did not
allow the study of English. After war, English became the most useful language
for international communication. Some private schools started English language
teaching even in grade one. This was the first time that Thailand used Thai
teachers to teach English as there was a great increase in the number of learners
wanting to study English.
