The Indus people had writing, but we have not been able to decipher its meaning.
This writing was seemingly unrelated to later Indian and other Asian scripts. However, most of this writing has been found on clay seals perhaps used like stamps to make imprints.
This is reminiscent of seals found in Mesopotamia, with which the Indus people had trade relations.
Many of these seals show images of animals, and sometimes people or perhaps deities.
