Apart from having blotches in the middle of the interradial region of the dorsal fin, this species is also unique among Southeast Asian Barilius in that even nonbreeding individuals have much larger dentary tubercles (Fig. 6B) than other species, such as B. signicaudus (Fig. 6A).
