A standard outdoor track measures 400 meters around the inside. There are eight lanes, each 4 feet (1.22 meters) wide. All races finish at the same place. Races are run counter clockwise - that is, with the inside of the track to the left of the runners. The best tracks have a surface made of a rubberized material that can be used in any weather.
Running equipment
Runners need very little equipment. they take the track in a pair of running shoes, shorts, and a jersey. They may or may not wear socks. Men should wear an athletic supporter. Many women wear a special brassiere to give them extra support. Add to this a warm up suit and you will have all you need. Spiked running shoes, or spikes, very according to the event, the track, and the runner's personal preference. No more than six spikes are allowed in the sole and two in the heel. And there may not be over 2.5 cm(1 in.) long.
