CANOGA PARK >> Police took a man into custody Sunday evening after his mother said he was trying to steal her car in Canoga Park, police said.
Police were called to an apartment complex in the 21000 block of Van Owen Street near Variel Avenue around 5 p.m. after a neighbor called to say she heard a woman screaming, Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Brian Woods of the Topanga Division said. Upon arrival, officers also heard a woman screaming and located a woman inside the complex.
The woman said her son tried to steal her car and that a knife may have been thrown in her direction, Woods said. No one was injured.
“The mom’s hysterical,” Woods said. “We’re still trying to calm her down.”
The son was located in the parking structure, taken into custody and may be booked for robbery, Woods said.
A police helicopter and at least 10 police cruisers responded to the scene.
