After Malaysia achieved independence in 1957, the goal to set up a modern medical centre emerged. In 1963 the building of the Medical Faculty and the University Hospital commenced, thus ushering in an avenue for highly sophisticated and economical medical care to grow in the nation.
A student's hostel known as the Clinical Student's Hostel, was also built and had its first intake in the year 1967. In 1974, the hostel changed its name to Ibnu Sina Hostel, the Sixth Residential College. Currently it is home to over 700 undergraduates, studying at UM.
