Most snakes have two jaws that are joined by stretchy tissue. This allows the animal to open its small mouth very wide and eat food much wider than itself. The upper jaw has fangs, which are used for grasping and, in some snakes, for spitting out poison, or venom. A snake's eyes are on either side of its head for good, all-round vision. It has a forked tongue that has few taste buds. But it has a special organ of smell, called Jacobson's organ, This, together with its nostrils, gives the snake a keen sense of smell.
