The lower dosage of lipids in the stand-alone diet contributed to less suffocating concentrations in the culture medium necessitating lower levels of oxygenation. Subsequently, lower foam formation and fewer losses were registered during culture/enrichment and harvesting.
These apparently minor changes triggered however a cascade of advantages starting with a lower consumption of highly praised essential nutrients, going over to a more stable and predictable rotifer nutrition to the ease of production in a more sustainable and consumer and environment friendly ways.A simple calculation base don this rotifer culture experiment shows that only the substitution of the enrichment step accounts for a saving of 31% on diet or a global saving on raw materials of lipids and protein of 35% and 26%,respectively during a rotifer culture
cycle of 4 days started at a density of 500 rot·ml−1(Table2)
