In other former Soviet republics, developments have varied. Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine have all seen popular movements for reform, bringing pro-Western governments to power and holding out the possibilities of democracy and increased stability. But Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turk-menistan, and Uzbekistan have all seen their leaders extend their terms in office against a worrying background of authoritarianism, flawed elections, and economic problems.
