12.1.3 Aldosterone
(See Chapter 8.) this mineralocorticoid is secreted in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex.Aldosterone stimulates sodium reabsorption in exchange for potassium and hydrogen ion secretion via cytoplasmic receptors—types I and II— in the renal collecting tubules. The type I receptors appear to be similar to the hippocampal high-affinity glucocorticoid receptors with cortisol and corticosterone acting via both types of receptors to cause changes in mineralocorticoids (Funder,1993). Several feedback mechanisms on aldosterone production exist, and these include plasma, adrenal and renal electrolyte concentrations and the reninangiotensin axis
