Another recent product innovation was the release by Fleer Trading Cards of 15,000 sets of “America’s Jews in America’s Game,” the brainchild of Brooklyn native Martin Abramowitz. The set includes a card for all 142 Jewish major leaguers from 1871 through 2003, including Hall of Famers Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, as well as lesser lights such as Mike “Superjew” Epstein and Moe “The Rabbi of Swat” Solomon. The set is available only to those who make a $100 contribution to the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), which spent $25,000 to underwrite the project. MLB, the MLBPA and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum have supported the project as well. Interest in the sets has been high, says Abramowitz (who works for the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Boston), who initiated the series because he wanted a complete set of all Jewish players for himself, and there were no cards for 40 Jewish players. He tracked down all the player photographs himself. “Five years ago. I was sitting at the kitchen table with my son … lamenting that I’ll probably never have a complete collection (of Jewish players).
