After the death of Sarit during December 1963, ThanomKittikachon became Prime Minister. He maintained Sarit’s political system and economic and social development plans. However the Porkhun system proved to be difficult to continue with, as Thanom’s personality differed from Sarit’s. The centralized bureaucratic power remained, but the political pressure exhumed by the people ultimately compromised Thanom’s personality and suspended political development under the Phorkun system. This pressure was present in the masses that demanded political rights, equality and political participation through the constitution and the general election process. Plans that centred on economic and educational development were duly affected.57
