To create an image using the
travertine tile transfer process:
1. Prepare your digital image by printing it on transfer film. Make sure your image is large enough to
extend over the edge of the tile.
2. The travertine tile is the surface onto which we’ll
be transferring the image. Most tiles can be used
directly from the package, but if yours are dusty
you can wipe them down with a damp cloth. If
there are depressions with dust, a little canned
air will blast them out. Make sure the tile is completely dry before proceeding (Figure 13.1).
3. Prepare one quart of gelatin (eight batches) in
a single microwave-proof glass container as
described in Chapter 10.
4. Heat the gelatin in the microwave, immediately remove it and carefully (it’s hot!) pour the
gelatin into the fondue pot. Set the pot to 100
degrees and wait for the temperature to stabilize
(Figure 13.2).
5. To create the transfer layer, stir in 1 tablespoon of
polymer medium (gloss) and 1 tablespoon of fluid
matte medium per batch of gelatin.
6. Put on your heat protective gloves for the next
steps.
7. Dip your bristle brush into the gelatin mixture
and carefully scrub the surface of the tile with the
brush. You want to work the mixture into all the
cracks and holes in the tile to avoid air bubbles
under the gelatin coating (Figure 13.3).
