The lac levels in stomach and small intestine chyme
were lower than in the diet, with one exception: part 3 of
small intestine. In cecal and colonal contents lac was not
detectable, indicating that higher amounts of lac were
digested and absorbed up to the end of small intestine
and lac amounts entering the hindgut were fermented
very fast (no differences in lac concentration between
cecum and colon contents). Assuming that lac is
digested mainly by the intestinal flora higher concentrations
of lactic acid and/or vfa might occur. But only in
the hindgut of piglets significantly higher vfa concentrations
were measured
