Lesson SOC 37
Task: Float in a pool.
Prerequisites: SOC 35, SOC 36
Concept: As with all of the activities related to pools and swimming, the student's safety must remain the major focus. Personnel certified in aquatic safety must be present during these activities. This lesson seeks to expand upon some skills learned in the two prerequisites of controlling breath and kicking in the pool. Being comfortable in the water, holding the breath as needed, and holding onto the side of the pool are beginning points for learning this skill. Pool depth in this activity should always be less than the shoulder height of the student.
Behavioral Objective: When unsupported by physical guidance or flotation devices, but directly supervised, the student will float his or her body in a pool for at least 10 seconds for 20 trials.
Materials: A pool, proper flotation devices, and appropriate swimwear.
Task Analysis:
1. Begin by reviewing the concept of holding onto the side of the pool but do not promote the kicking activity as previously performed. Prompt the student to hold his or her head up and take a deep breath. Support where necessary to achieve momentary flotation on the stomach.
2. While fully physically supporting the student, hold-him or her on his or her back and prompt the holding of a deep breath while in an "on-the-back" floating position.
3. Continue Step 2, adding flotation devices and gradually decreasing the support to the student's back until floating occurs.
4. Continue Step 3, removing the flotation devices as reasonable. (Note. For some students, a flotation device may be needed for a considerable time. If the student is not ready to float without these devices, do not force the issue.)
