Sam was amused when Adam told him about the Klansmen.
“I told them to leave,” Adam said. “Just a few minutes ago. I
exchanged words with them. They don’t care about you, Sam,
they’re just using this execution for publicity. They want you
dead, Sam. It’s great advertising for them.”
“You really told them that?” Sam asked, smiling, and with a
trace o f pride.
“Yeah. Sam, we need to talk about your claims. The Mississippi
Supreme Court just turned down our claim that you are
mentally unfit. The US Supreme Court denied the cruelty
appeal. Fifth Circuit isn’t responding to the ineffectiveness claim.
Not a very good morning.”
“The Jackson TV station this morning said I’ve requested a
clemency hearing from the governor,” Sam said. “That can’t be
true. I didn’t approve it.”
