Some other people thought that morality was not inherent in human nature, but Mencius thought that it was—goodness was a universal aspect of basic human behavior.
Thus we do not really need to cultivate our goodness if we can just allow our original, basic goodness to come through.
To Mencius, if we realize our own inherent goodness, then we have also come to know heaven.
This goodness, like heaven, can transcend (encompass) all things.
