The producing life of an oil well can be divided into phases, each defined by the amount of energy or pressure in the reservoir. The life of a gas well is similarly affected by pressure decline, but its phases are less complex because gas itself is a less complex medium to produce. Figure 8-4, a plot of reservoir pressure against time, illustrates the profound importance of pressure. In the initial years of a well's producing life, reservoir pressure is high, and the fluids in the reservoir flow into the wellbore and to the surface. But inevitably, reservoir pressure declines and may drop below the pressure at the bottom of the production tubing, halting the flow. That calls for some kind of assistance.
