1.1 The Growth of Tourism in Asia Tourism has been growing very rapidly in Asia (1998). Tourism will not only play an important role in the economic development but also bring enormous social and cultural effects. Many Asian countries positioned tourism as a leading industry and as a change agent and a tool for development. However, experiences showed that unplanned growth and mismanagement of tourism can damage the natural and social-cultural environments of many tourism destinations (Ha & Lew, 1998). The problem of sustainability is emerging with tourism development and community tourism is believed to be an effective approach. Voices for promoting community tourism and involving community in tourism development are widely heard. However, until now, most of the research only focuses on what should be done to develop community tourism but not enough cases have been accumulated to support proposed community tourism development models and proposed policies.
