Last, our current tools to identify excessive
sleepiness and to distinguish it from fatigue, weakness,
or lassitude are neither sensitive nor specific
enough to be applicable across all situations, individuals,
occupations, or life stages at all times.
I would like to propose a new screening questionnaire
for hypersomnia—the North America
Predictor of Sleepiness (NAPS) scale. This is a
six-item tool that addresses diverse facets of excessive
sleepiness, namely, introspective-general
(i), introspective-temporal (ii), introspective-goal
oriented (iii), manifest-objective (iv), manifestdescriptive
(v), and physiologic-self-report (vi).
