One evening, Inspector Rod Eliot has to deal with an apparent case of suicide in Blackheath, London. The victim is Alex Forley, a wealthy young man, who had a small group of close friends: the Crowthers (his neighbours), Amanda Grant (his girlfriend) and the Wilvers (Mr. Wilver was Forley’s doctor). When Eliot starts his investigation, he can’t find out anything conspicious about the victim or his friends. But why did Forley - set upon committing suicide - have so much money at home? Has his death got something to do with Forley’s fear of being ill (cancer)? The riddle seems to be solved when the policemen discover that the gun Forley shot himself with belongs to Mr. Crowther. But Forley's neighbour has a solid alibi. Was it suicide after all? Or did anybody else really have "a finger in the pie"?
