A literature and herbarium-based survey of subsp. moggridgei and var. burnatii has shown that the taxonomic status of the Italian populations is uncertain [11]. A thorough phylogenetic analysis aiming at assessing their genetic relationships with respect to other widespread congeneric taxa of the Alpine chain (for example F. tubiformis Gren. & Godr.), will provide information essential for the formulation of appropriate management strategies for the conservation of all these populations.
