This cookie model is quick and works well in large classes (e.g. 70 to 100 students). If the materials are prepared before class, the whole experiment can be conducted in less than 10 minutes. I find the method to be effective. When I ask students to discuss or define independent assortment on genetic tests, they frequently answer by beginning with a phrase such as, "Like the cookie experiment" or "As with the cookie experiment." Last summer Jon Hendrix, a science educator in our department, used the cookie model in his Human Genetics for Special Education (Biology 253) class. According to Jon, "For students in Biology 253, I tried the Cookie Model for the Development of the Concept of Independent Assortment and found it to be an effective way to introduce the concept of independent assortment with students that have little background in biology.
