Between Chiang Rai and Mae Sai along highway 110 is the turn off to Doi Tung (Flag Mountain) From here the road gradually winds its way through lush forests and passes Shan, Akha and Lahu hill tribe villages on its way up towards Mae Fah Luang Gardens and The Royal Villa. Also on this mountain you will find Wat Phrahthat Doi Tung, which has become an important pilgrimage spot for buddhists from many countries. The highlight for most visitors to Doi Tung is the Mae Fah Luang Garden, covering the slopes below the Royal Villa. Formal flower gardens and Rock gardens can be found here with special displays put on for the annual winter festival between October and April.
