The Isle of Man has a reciprocal health agreement with the UK, which allows for referrals to the UK for any treatment that cannot be provided on Island, and for free treatment as a result of illness or accident while in the UK. No reciprocal agreement exists with the European Union as a whole, though there are individual agreement between the Isle of Man and some other countries. It should be noted that these agreement only provide for basic healthcare needs as a result of accident or emergency and the Department recommend that all travellers have private medical insurance.

The Island has a central Social Sevices division which is part of the Department of Social Care. It is responsible for the assessment of the social care needs of the people of the Isle of Man provided help and support for children under 16 and their families; people with physical or learning disabilities; people over 65 with physical,mental health or social care problems; people in community with mental health problems and voluntary organizations working with vulnerable people.
