Consider the case of Pushpa who lost her mother at the age of fourteen. She said, "I lost everything in life when my mother died" and that was the way she lived thereafter. She joined the convent soon after her 10th class and became a "very good" religious. At the age of 40 she realised that she was living a life without any passion or goal in life. She had no feelings. She would smile at everything people
said to her even when it was hurtful. The community loved her for her simplicity and generosity, but they would not take her seriously. Some considered her a mentally dull person. In fact, nobody could understand her behaviours. Her lack of zest eventually lea her to group psychotherapy. In the group Pushpa was able to get in touch with her grief over her mother's death, say goodbye to her and decide to live her life without mother. Eventually, those around her noticed significant changes in her and began to relate to her differently. Unresolved grief has impact on personality function, but is not easily recognised and consequently is often not worked through, leaving the person to suffer without knowing why.
