As these chemicals are widely used and present in different ecological compartments, they have all been the subject of extensive research, yet their safety is still a controversial issue. Our data provide further insight into the toxicological profile of these contaminants. Bearing in mind the ecological importance of Chironomus larvae in freshwater environments, the study of the effects of EDCs on the genetic integrity in C. riparius could contribute to a better understanding of the environmental impact of these compounds on aquatic ecosystems.
