Data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication revealed that∼80 % of those who attempt suicide in the USA had previously been diagnosed with a mental disorder [25], and major depression is the most salient risk factor of suicide [25–28]. Further, in those individuals without a mental disorder, depressive symptoms are associated with suicide ideation (e.g., [29, 30]). For example, a study of suicide attempters found that indices of depressive symptoms were positively correlated with an index of suicidal ideation [31].
