One part of the socialization process, and a special case of training, is the new employee orientation process. Orientation should inform and educate and help an employee become excited about the first days on the job. Orientation can provide a background and history of the company, am understanding of its philosophy and values, its expectations for service and quality, the names and roles of key players in the workplace, rules and disciplinary expectations, emergency procedures, policies on sexual harassment, and what an employee needs to know to get around. Figure 6-13 provides a sample list of orientation topics.
