An area that needs to be addressed especially is the experience of sexual abuse and exploitation (see Nedungatt, Ch. 10, this volume). There is research that indicates that many young people in India are sexually abused (Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, 2007). Much of this abuse happens in the home. It is very likely that a number of candidates to religious life and priesthood today are victims of abuse. There is also anecdotal as well as research evidence that many religious and seminarians experience sexual abuse as adults too (Parappully, 2003). Special care has to be taken to help these individuals to work through their trauma as well as to take steps to prevent further victimisation. Spiritual direction (see Nedungatt, Ch. 16, volume 2) and psychological counselling (see Parappully, Ch. 17, volume 2) are two very important means of help in this area.
