In such circumstances, the book becomes like a millstone around the necks of all concerned, removing, as it does, the very possibility of Engagement which its writer hoped to provoke in the first place. As a result, some teachers take the decision to do without textbooks altogether, a decision which may well be of benefit to their students if, and only if, the teacher has the experience and time to provide a consistent programmer of work on his or her own and if he or she has a bank of materials to back up the decisions that are taken. Such a decision will need the agreement of the students too.
